the memory keeper's daughter

After reading the book, The memory keeper’s daughter, I have repeated one sentence many times in my mind: Love is complicated.

 

Apparently, David is not a responsible father for Phoebe because he just abandoned her as soon as he knew she was a “Down syndrome ” child. However, he has loved and cared about his daughter since he has known she is still alive. For instance, he sent cash to Caroline, who is Phoebe’s adopted mother, to assist with living expenses. Also, he tried eagerly to meet his daughter at the end of his life. Although David has never lived together with his daughter Phoebe in real life, she is always living in his mind. From all his guilt and self-accusation, I tend to believe that he loves his daughter.

 

Actually, David did the inappropriate thing to their daughter just because he loved his wife so much that he tried to prevent his wife from suffering heartbreak. Having lost his younger sister, he knew deeply the feeling about losing our beloved ones after a close family relationship. Thus, he was very brave and decided to do something for his beloved wife which from his perspective seemed better. However, it was totally wrong in the beginning for all of them, his wife, Phoebe, Caroline and himself.  

 

Although his wife, Norah, left him at the end, they are still love each other deeply. After Norah knew she had lost her daughter, she was sad and lonely but David could not identify with her because of his guilt. As a husband, David felt so guilty that he forced himself to work devotedly and had no time for Norah. Consequently, Norah has affairs with several other men for seeking love. Honestly, I could under her feeling although I disagree with her behavior. Norah is just a fragile and delicate wife who needs attention and love. 

 

Caroline is a respectable mother who is willing to love and be loved. Although she knew it is illegal to place a new-born girl in an institution without the mother’s consent, she did it for the unrequited love of David. She helped David in the way he needed. After that, she raised Phoebe unconditionally as her own daughter. It seems that she considered Phoebe as part of David. Meanwhile, she has been kept sending David his daughter’s pictures and letter for many years. The reason is that she was still waiting for David to realize his fault and redeem hisself. She was such a patient lady for love.
 

Last but not least, Al is a wonderful and responsible man. He takes full responsibility for taking care of Caroline and Phoebe just for love. As a long-distance driver, it is difficult for him to make sufficient money for a decent life and stay with his family members at the same time. However, he tried his best to let Caroline and Phoebe feel be loved by bringing gifts, such as flowers and small treats every time when he came back home.

 

I cried sadly while I read the part about David’s death. It is heartbreaking that David died all alone with the endless guilt. Although he did something wrong, he did not deserve to die. In my mind, he is still a good father and husband. He just needed more time or different ways to love the people he loved.
